Old Painting…

15 10 2010

In 1996, while in Halifax, Nova Scotia, I painted this moose picture from the Cape Breton highlands.

Bull Moose, 1996

This one found a home in Harold Tyler’s camp in Wesley, Maine.

I recently took these photos while on a moosehunt (successful!) with the Tylers (Harold, Evans, and Jeremy, the permit holder, and his buddy Joe, the sub-permittee.

Blueberry Barrens (8 x 10 – $125 framed)

9 10 2010

Our son Darrell was here this week, and he and I painted together in my studio (the porch).  We picked a photo of a blueberry barren with a “camp” on it, on the way to Machias, Maine.  Here is my version.

Underpainting

I painted the sky, then underpainted darks with purple and lights with yellow.

Then I painted the rest of the scene on top of the underpainting.

Blueberry Barren after Harvest

After harvest, blueberry bushes take on vivid hues of blazing orange, red, and purple – an amazing view as you drive along country roads.  The “camp” is no longer there; it burned or was torn down a year or two ago.

This one is now at the Gray Wolf Gallery in Addison for the open house Saturday, October 16.  It is priced at $125.

Triptych revisited…

21 09 2010

I recently visited a very dear customer, the home of my first and only (so far) triptych, and got a couple of shots of it in it’s permanent surroundings.

Another opportunity…

We are headed for “Blue Heron Camp” – at Juniper Camp, Florida.   An opportunity to mingle with friends, old and new, and for me, an opportunity to paint some local nature scenes; for Janice, knitting and quilting.  Karsten’s Fine Art is on the move!  Any memorable results will be posted here upon our return – stay tuned!

I recently took a workshop “Painting Mood and Atmosphere” by Carolyn Lewis – she is good!  However, my attempt at putting some of this new knowledge to work fails to impress.  I will be working on that, as time permits.  I’ll publish it, in the interest of “fair and balanced” reporting…

26 02 2010

End of painting sabattical.  It was a fairly productive month; now it is time to start breaking everything down, load the minivan, and head North.  Will be stopping in Georgia to visit with family, then continue on to Maine, arriving probably by March 10 or 11.  In the meantime:  Happy Painting!

Lobsterboat at The Ladle

7 02 2010

A dear friend of the family, Sid Banks, has passed.  We are on our way to Plano, Texas to be with his wife for a few days.  In the meantime, all blog activities will be on hold.  See you soon!

The triptych is “resting”, so I decided to work on another seascape that’s been waiting in the wings – here is my lobsterboat at The Ladle, a funny looking island just outside our harbor in Maine.

Line drawing with underpainting.
