Blueberry Barrens (8 x 10 – $125 framed)

9 10 2010

Our son Darrell was here this week, and he and I painted together in my studio (the porch).  We picked a photo of a blueberry barren with a “camp” on it, on the way to Machias, Maine.  Here is my version.

I painted the sky, then underpainted darks with purple and lights with yellow.

Then I painted the rest of the scene on top of the underpainting.

Blueberry Barren after Harvest

After harvest, blueberry bushes take on vivid hues of blazing orange, red, and purple – an amazing view as you drive along country roads.  The “camp” is no longer there; it burned or was torn down a year or two ago.

This one is now at the Gray Wolf Gallery in Addison for the open house Saturday, October 16.  It is priced at $125.

Nor’easter at Sandy Beach – $150 unframed

17 01 2010

This is another project that’s been on my to-do list for a long time.  Ocean Drive on Mt. Desert Island is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Maine, and Sandy Beach is one of the most popular stops along the way.  I caught it during a storm, with unbelievable waves crashing against the rocks and the beach in rapid succession.  Here is my impression of the event.  (I show three stages of development; the final version is yet to come…).  By the way, just down the road from here  is where several people were washed off the rocks by a rogue wave last fall, with at least one dead.  The sheer power of these waves is unbelievable.

This is the underpainting, on a 12″ x 16″ canvasboard toned with viridian green.

Stage 2 – blocking in some shape and color.

Added most of the details I wanted; some more refinement needed.

Here is the final version – on a 12″ x 16″ canvasboard.  Maybe someday it will turn into a major studio painting, 30 x 40???

The Marshes at Carrying Place – $100 unframed

15 01 2010

Another little nature painting.  I have wanted to paint this for a long time; I love wandering around in this area, enjoying the natural beauty and the wildlife.  I usually see blue herons when I come here.  This painting is oil on canvasboard, 9″ x 12″.  Price:  SOLD

Moose Painting – $200 unframed

3 01 2010

Just added another wildlife painting – Domestic Bliss – depicting a cow and bull moose at a lake.  This was painted in Halifax in 1996.

The panels have been ordered, shipped, and on the way. In the meantime, I’m designing the project in my head. Here is the picture the customer has asked to be painted.

Sunrise photo

Sunrise on Veierland

I have just received a new commission to paint a Norwegian sunrise on three large (24″ x 48″) panels. My immediate reaction, besides being very excited about this project, is to turn it into an advanced class in seascape painting. Stay tuned for details as they develop!
